Sustainability
In times of limited resources and worldwide increasing impacts on the climate it is a common task to act with consideration regarding the commodities. An effective method is to obtain valuable commodities from the accrued recyclable material by intelligent and selective sorting to be subjected to modern recycling processes. Thus, with mixed packaging waste alone, our customers achieve a sorting rate of more than 60 %. That means the finally accruing recyclable material is being reduced to 40 % of the primary capacity. At the same time, 60 % of the material is recycled in subsequently conducted processes. This procedure therefore contributes significantly to a more positive environmental balance.
The saving of the natural resources is the link to the ecological policy of our customers. Against the background of closed substance cycles, we obtain a high level of attention when organizing the disposal. Every single waste fraction is now separately identified to investigate its recycling potential by a powerful EDP system (waste fractions like iron, steel, paper and mixed metals). The resulting ecological advantage directly inures to the benefit of our customers.
Rhenus implements the concept of sustainability in all processes and focuses on the idea that both the use of energy and valuable resources can be significantly saved by recycling.
For example, paper recycling: When Rhenus Data Office feeds the accruing paper during the destruction of files in the substance cycle again, the environment and climate will benefit from this considerably, for the production of one ton of paper from new wood fibers requires about 3 tons of wood, 52.000 liters of water and 10.000 kWh of electricity, in which the CO2 emission approximately amounts to 1.000 kg. If, instead, paper fibers made from waste paper are used, the need for raw material and energy cuts down to 1 ton of waste paper, 20.000 liters of water and 4.1000 kWh, while the CO2 emission drops down to 800 kg.
